That didn’t take long. On Friday – when the first trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was released to select theaters – it was simultaneously released on line.
At the 9:45 screening in the Marcus Majestic Bistro auditorium, nine out of ten in attendance were there to see “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.” I was the tenth, there for the 88-sec0nd “Star Wars” trailer, only to come home and learn that it had already drawn 5 million views on YouTube.
It goes by pretty quickly. The first image is of a Stormtrooper, looking lost on a desert planet, possibly Tatooine, that was home to Luke and Anakin Skywalker. It is accompanied by a husky voice over: “Have you felt it? There has been an awakening.”
Then in quick succession there are images of an R2-D2 prototype rolling across the sand, like a beachball; more storm troopers locked and loaded; a female rebel fighter on a rocket propelled rust bucket; and a star-fighter sequence
As a hooded figure walks through a snowy forest, the same narrator intones “The dark side” as the figure wields a three pronged light saber that looks like it is made of fire. “And the light,” the voice continues, as the screen shows what appears to be the Millenium Falcon battling with Tie Fighters. Cue John Williams familiar iconic theme.
